cuantía de responsabilidad civil

Spanish to English Social Sciences Law (general)
From an article about child-friendly juvenile justice, in which the authors are discussing the impact of using legalese when dealiing with juveniles:

En otra ocasión, se pudo observar que a algunos chicos no les quedaba claro cuál era la cuantía de responsabilidad civil que se les pedía, debido al vocabulario que se había empleado

I am not clear if this refers to damages, compensation, civil liability or something else. There is no other context.

i prefer liability in the insurance industry (at least in the UK), liability is used rather than civil liability.

Thanks for the suggestions but I have finally manged to contact the author, who says it refers to “indemnización económica que el condenado debe pagar por los daños y prejuicios producidos” so my intuition was correct but it seemsm unlikely that minors would be made to pay damages.

@all Thanks for your help. There is no other context, as I have said this is just an example of misunderstanding due to the use of non child-friendly language. When I first read it, I assumed "cuantía" referred to some sort of payment as I don't recall ever seeing it used in other contexts.

More context would help I agree with Phil's ambivalence and reasons for it. Using Thos West as a guide, I would plump for "extent of their civil liability" (as opposed to criminal liability).

Thanks That makes a lot more sense. So it sounds like someone has used the term "cuantía de responsabilidad civil", and they don't understand it. In this context, I think it means damages.

No mention is made of their offences. Most of the article is a fairly tedious list of observations from courtrooms on the implementation of EU guidelines on child-friendly justice.
