PAINTING-CRAFT

"İş" is more related to craft rather than art. Since the course is part of the education curriculum rather than the art curriculum, the course's goal is to teach painting techniques or painting craft. It does not go deeply into the art of painting.

The term "arts & crafts" has a completely different meaning. For this term to be correct, the Turkish equivalent would have to be "sanat-iş".
Peer comment(s):

agree Erkan Dogan : It is clearly about "painting" in first half and "craft" in the other.

I see it more like "painting as craft". This class is not usually taught in the fine arts department because it is superficial. Only techniques of painting are taught. Graduates are art teachers from the education department.
agree YLN : I hold my foot down! The course that is called resim-iş is known as "arts and crafts" or "art and craft" in English speaking countries. Period.

Unfortunately it is misunderstood due to the complexity of the Turkish education system. I worked in the university and I was close to the Resim-İş section of the education department. There is also a separate "Fine Arts" department.

Though there may be other possible answers, these classes are called art & craft classes at most schools in the UK. Good luck!
