This "agency" is supposedly in Canada, yet they offer:
600 words at 0.049 ARS per word [ TOTAL: 29.40 ARS ]
Comes out to about US$ 0.016 per word, but they offer to pay in Argentine currency from Canada..
When I saw it, there had been 15 offers received already. I sincerely hope that they were not offers, but something else.
All this is just sick, we see it too much. I'll let the rest of you comment.

I sent them an e-mail asking them if there weren t mistaken..
No answer.
Yes, it s 0.015 per source word (pesos)
And the translator will face financial expenses, approx. a 10% of the final price, if i m not mistaken (eg using paypal and not having an bank account in USA)
The translator pays expensive softwares, high speed internet, etc. etc.

Something similar happened last week, but from China.
A chinese agency offfered to pay ARS 0.03 per word.
I assumed it was a mistake and contacted a moderator (following the rules). The moderator answered immediatley and sent an email to the agency telling about this.
End of the story. The ad remained there, untouched, for 3-4 days. About 40 people applied.

I don t remember if Paypal charges you a fixed amount for sending you a check if you don t have an account in USA.
If this is the case, the translator will be loosing money.
Maybe somedy remembers it.

2006 Argentina is not the same one of 2002 ( the super crash)
There s been inflation. Don t sweat. We re used to the roller coaster economy.
People paying rents...Well there is a global movement into Real Estate investments, but the issue s that rents are very high here.
But i guess, that outsourcers only take into account curency, and many factors strike our economy.
I feel like singing a Tango after writing this.

I do remember.
Paypal charges about 4.5% commision on every deposit you get in your account.
Plus USD 11 per check issued and sent.

Paypal has nothing to do with this.
The miserable pay, which seems to be derived from a miserable perception of our profession has EVERYTHING to do with it.
The point is, what can we do to change that perception? What can we do to change that pay?
And Alicia, you can sing all the tangos you want, but that does not change the situation. What can?

I just wonder that it's not so much that these agencies/outsourcers whoever they are, really have a miserable perception of us but more that they themselves are unprofessional and want everything done on the cheap.
There are companies in every profession, good and bad and the bad ones like to cut corners. Take builders for example. Maybe I want a conservatory built in my garden so I could place an ad with the work I want done and a rate at which I want it built. I don't want to spend much money so I ask for quotes at a low rate. This isn't because I have a miserable perception of the building profession it's just because I'm cheap and I don't want to spend any more money than I really have to and I know that the true professionals cost more. My new conservatory will probably fall down during a storm and then I'll have to pay the professionals to rebuild it but the fact remains that I would have been able to find a group of cowboys to build it on the cheap.
All we can do as professionals ourselves is to ignore the ridiculous job offers and hope that these lousy agencies receive a lousy translation and then have to pay what they should have paid in the beginning to get the job done properly.

I think we can do much more... rivers of ink have been written on this subject in these forums, so I am not going to repeat it all. But ignoring the problem hoping it will just disappear does not seem to me like the best option.
