Yes!! This has happened to me too. All this junk e-mail, junk Skype requests... so much wasted time...

But in the end we've all got to live with it, as reverting to the pre-Internet days is completely out of the question

twice Nov 12, 2008

It happened twice, with an Italian angency, unfortunately I emptied the spam folder and I lost their message and with a direct customer.

Since then, I always check the spam folder before pressing the Empty button.

None of the two messages included anythithing which could make think of spam.....

Have a nice evening!

Just recently Nov 12, 2008

I was in contact recently with a new client whose emails always arrived with the name of the company prominently displayed. As soon as I agreed to work with them, someone from another department in the company sent me an email with just a personal name in the heading (I had not yet dealt with the person) and a nameless attachment.

Keeping in mind rule number one of receiving emails: if you don't know who it's from and you decide to open it anyway - you're looking for trouble, and if after opening it, you still don't know who it's from, open any attachment at your own risk!

So, I sent it right to the spam box and didn't think anything more about it. The next day they wrote again (this time using the company name) and asked why I hadn't answered their email!

Moral of the story: if you're an agency with more than a couple of employees, make sure all emails include the company name in the header and a descriptive title in the subject box.

Yep, but it wasn't me! Nov 12, 2008

It was my spam filter. I check the folder daily, just in case. It was a good client too, as it turned out!

Spam filters... Nov 12, 2008

Laureana Pavon wrote:

My spam filter has twice sent a client's e-mail directly to the spam folder: once because the subject was all caps and the other because the subject was in German (I don't know why but I get lots of spam in German...)
Needless to say I always check my spam folder carefully before performing any cleanup
Cheers!
Laureana

Exactly. In fact, the first time it sent... the originals for a 35.000 word job. I of course watch the spam folder quite often since, though (as Murphy's law dictates) it has never happened since

Message's Subject Nov 12, 2008

Spam filters do for non spam and sometimes don't and let them reside in my inbox till I remove them myself.
I don't open any message unless I get a clue about the content.
I don't get confused when it comes to lottery and Viagra spams.
Clients sometimes use very short non indicative subjects like "New job", "Offer" , "Collaboration" or "urgent" which are almost the same as the message subject of spams that I receive regularly.
I really don't know whether I missed an oppo

I really don't know whether I missed an opportunity because I treated a message as spam.

I agree with John there should be a code for the title; like the one of the messages we receive from ProZ.com for example.
[Company name] Translation/Proofreading/Editing [Language pair]
This is the one I use when I outsource even it's not the first time to contact the translator.
This helps also when I need to order messages according to subject.

But I once had to send back a reply marked ++++ SPAM !!! ++++ by an over-zealous filter that was promptly uninstalled the following day.

it sends an email to SPAM. However, I always check my spam folder if there's anything new... you never know! But mostly it's stuff for penis enlargement, nigerian bank scams and prescription drugs.

One day my customer phoned me but I said to him that it was wrong number. It happened because it took a month after my quoting so I even forgot about it.

Other - I have not, but my anti-spam has Nov 13, 2008

In fact, on one occasion it wasn't even the anti-spam filter on my machine, but the anti-spam on my ISP's server.
I was asked to translate a letter a few years back, and I began it with

Dear...,

This was enough to trigger an anti-spam filter that my ISP had set up (in France). It was also a time when a lot of viruses came in emails with Dear...,

I discovered this because I know them well and they had to rethink their spam filters!

This was enough to trigger an anti-spam filter that my ISP had set up (in France). It was also a time when a lot of viruses came in emails with Dear...,

I discovered this because I know them well and they had to rethink their spam filters!

Naturally, they applied rules for the majority of their customers (French) and I had to be the exception, didn't I?

That sort of thing doesn't happen now.

I now have my spam filter configured to mark messages as spam, but to send them to my inbox nonetheless.

It's too easy to miss something important in a Spam folder!

Personally, no -> but sometimes my mail server (yahoo) does it without my say-so.
That's why I never use Outlook, it is far too complex and presumptious IMO and does stuff without being configured/told to...

Unfortunately it happens quite often. Nov 13, 2008

I deal with managing the spam-filtering for my company, (35 users, each day about 40'000 incoming mails, and only 1.5%-1.7% valid mail).
Our largest spam-supplier is the Republic of Korea. We also have some customers from there, their mails are getting blocked about once a month, and it's quite a hassle to find those ones.
