A powwow is planned for Monday evening, for people who are still not all networked out.
The purpose of this powwow page is to have a rough estimate of how many people would attend this powwow, and how many of them would like to eat dinner.
As on all powwows, everybody is expected to pay for their own consumption. Everybody is welcome - even if you do not attend the conference itself.
FINALIZED
IMPORTANT: This dinner is not part of the conference package, so you will have to pay extra.
I found an even better place. It's only 5 minutes walking from Hotel Benczúr. Platán ("sycamore tree") is a mixture of a lounge, a diner and a self-service restaurant, big enough for 120 people indoors, with 60 more places outdoors.
There's a wide range of selection, including international cuisine, traditional Hungarian dishes and vegetarian meals. We will have a short menu to choose from, this is the only way they can manage around 100 guests in a brief period of time.
You can choose a la carte, so there's no set minimum and you will not have to pay anything in advance.
Drinks include soft drinks, draft and bottled beer, a good selection of Hungarian wines, plus the most popular liquors.
There's a man-one-band playing every night, but can also listen to music from CDs.
Guests are welcome.
A main course costs between HUF 1400 and 2000 (EUR 6-9), soups and desserts are 600, light meals are around 1500, etc.
This place is also child-friendly with two high chairs and a small table with small chairs for toddlers.
Everybody will have a printed menu, created specifically for our event. You will be requested to write your name on top of your menu. As you order, the waiter will tick the item on the your menu. All drink orders will also be marked on this menu. When you move around tables, you will be expected to take this personal menu sheet with you. When you pay, you simply take this sheet with you.
There's no service charge included, but you will be expected to add a tip between 5 and 10%. (I usually give around 5-7%).
This powwow is planned for April 30th, Monday evening, from 7 pm onwards.
I just bring myself / something to eat would be fine - When in Hungary, then Hungarian - but I go for Platan too. Thanks to Csaba for all your commitments in this and all other cases :-)

Dear All,
Thank you for signing up for Monday evening's farewell dinner. I'm really hesitating between two places, please help me decide which one.
Both places would offer buffet dinner with the first round of drinks included. There are vegetarian options in both cases. Both restaurants offer very good food in their own category, I tested them.

1. Hungarian-style restaurant (www.fakanaletterem.hu) in the building of the central market hall. Traditional meals, live gypsy music (I'm a little afraid, maybe it's too touristy or too tacky). Max capacity: 180. It would only make sense if at least 80 of us will be there. Logistics are hard: there's no easy public transport link, so it would be necessary to rent 2 or 3 buses which adds up to the cost. About 120 people can sit in one large hall, and an additional 60 nearby, seperated by a glass wall (one door is open though). With all items added up, one person should pay around HUF 6500 - 7000.
2. A Western-style pub within walking distance from the hotel (www.cactusjuice.com), in the bar district. This is in a cellar. This place is smaller than the other, the maximum number they can handle is 140. There is one larger room (80 people), a tiny one (20) nearby, and a medium size (40), which is about 20 meters away, so a bit isolated from the rest. There will be a DJ from 9 pm, playing funky music, and listening to your requests. It's international food here, easier to digest than traditional Hungarian meals. There's another room that usually serves as the dancefloor. This place is open until 2 am (or longer if they see we don't want to leave). All items added up, this would cost between HUF 6000 and 6500, so it's about 2 euros cheaper that the other one. It's a pleasant walk from this pub back to the hotel, and this area is full of bars, so you may even go pub-crawling.
Which one would you prefer?
Also, I'd like to ask you to indicate your willingness in participating on the conference page, under the Program tab.
Whichever place we choose, I really have to confirm one or the other by early next week.

I think the best way would be by changing your note that appears next to your name. You can simply add "Fakanál" or "Cactus Juice".

We would prefer option 1, Western style pubs being ten a penny world-wide; authentic Hungarian not so.

Fakanál's the natural choice since I'll be in Hungary.

Choices
Mar 25, 2007
I can see Fakanál has taken a clear lead over Cactus. Apart from the voting ratio, an even more important aspect in choosing the location is the total number of people interested in dining on Monday night.
Fakanál is a single large hall, much like a cafeteria. This restaurant is within the market hall, so the building will be opened only for us (if we go there). I think it's a viable option only if we are at least 70 people.

Cactus Juice is smaller, it's suitable for up to 90 people in a large and a small room next to each other (with an additional 40 tucked away).
So basically, if we are less than 70, it's Cactus without question. Between 70 and 110, we can choose between the two places. Above 110, I would vote for Fakanál. ▲ Collapse

Dear Csaba, As living in western, the usual food here is western too. If I am in Hungary I would rather eat hungarian (same happens with all other countries), but whatever the choice is, I will be there. Thank you for all your efforts! Many greetings from Nuremberg, Helena

Dear Csaba, as I eat every day western, when I am in Hungary, I would rather eat hungarian (same happens with all other countries). So, my choice is Fakanál. Please as soon as you know where will it be, let us know it! I hope that the menu list is not only in hungarian, as I would like to know what I order prior to eat it!!! ;o))) Thank you very much for all your efforts! Many greetings, Helena

I found an even better place
Apr 17, 2007
Dear colleagues,
I found an even better place, just a few hundred meters from Hotel Benczúr. See the powwow page or the conference session page for more details.
The big advantage is that there's no set minimum consumption, so if you don't much, this will turn out to be cheaper. They offer a good selection of Hungarian, international and vegetarian meals.
Csaba
