I don't like working on the move (i.e. on a laptop). I'd be away from my dictionaries and other resources, and I don't like any of the keyboards you get on laptops - I'm very fussy about keyboard layouts (remember I type Japanese as well) - as well their being too small anyway to work on. I'd also miss vast expanses of desk space on which I can spread things about in a systematically chaotic fashion and put document printouts on stands next to upright screens.

You can't do any of the above on a train or in a coffee shop.

Also, things are less likely to break down, crash or otherwise - i.e. they last longer - if you don't move them about all the time like a laptop.

Added last line.

Agree, but... Sep 7, 2014

I’m in total agreement with you. I don’t like working on the move. I only use my notebook occasionally when I travel for surfing and emailing. As I keep traveling a lot between Brussels and Lisbon (probably until June next year when I intend to go back home for good) it helps pass the time in the airports waiting for flights…

As for working at a cafe, I do it occasionally. I plan a break, walk around town, shop and sit at cafe. It means carrying small laptop all the time with me. I sometimes get a project that I can complete there in short time, and when cable connection breaks, I never know for how long, my first reaction is to take a taxi and go to my favourite cafe. For this, and when travelling, I have 13" laptop, and when I wanted to buy one several years ago, I asked at shop, if there was something weighing up to 1.5 kg. They laughed, everybody is asking for features, brands. I needed a light one, and there was not such a choice as nowadays

Time to show off...again! Sep 7, 2014

I love it when we find lightweight polls such as “How many dictionaries do you have?” or “How many languages do you translate from?”

Too bad that this platform has a very dated and counterintuitive way of posting photos.

Anyhow, I used to work with one or two powerful laptops (15- or 17-inches) until 2010, because I had retired from a short expat life in Argentina (where I used my laptops). I started with a Mac desktop (a very nice 24-inch iMac, back in 2008) pl

Anyhow, I used to work with one or two powerful laptops (15- or 17-inches) until 2010, because I had retired from a short expat life in Argentina (where I used my laptops). I started with a Mac desktop (a very nice 24-inch iMac, back in 2008) plus one of my older Windows laptops, then switched to a PC desktop (a powerful Lenovo machine) in 2011 and kept a MacBook 2009 that I had purchased in 2010 for a second (and unsuccesful) attempt at the expat life in Argentina.

By the way, if you plan on living/working in a place like Buenos Aires or some other Argentinean city, be aware of their draconian customs regulations, which have an extortionist bent.

Back to the topic, I'm pretty happy with my Lenovo desktop (which runs on Windows 7 Pro). I still run the MacBook 2009 on one of the 23-inch flat panel monitors in my 4-monitor array, and I keep a second, older Mac laptop that I bought for travel purposes (but I never took on a trip). Also, for travel purposes, I use a very nifty (and red) minilaptop loaded with Windows 7, Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12 and Adobe Standard Creative Suit (and 4 GB of RAM).

I don't plan to upgrade to Windows 8 or 9. I think Windows 7 will become the Windows XP of this decade.

I'm, er, well very happy to hear that, Mario. Because, um, I still use XP on both my PCs (says he fidgeting uncomfortably) and it still purrrrs like a kitten, well, an old kitty, that is. But good news to all other XP users out there - this dinosaur ain't dead yet! Just waiting to survive another OS meteorite strike.

Desktop, laptop, and 3 monitors Sep 7, 2014

Mac mini desktop with two 22" monitors.

And a MacBook Pro with an additional monitor for VMFusion for programs that don't run on a Mac.

Printer/scanner in the middle, although I rarely have to print out a job since I started using side-by-side monitors.

All set up on my L-shaped desk so I can reach everything without getting up.

I have 2 desktop PCs and 2 laptops. One laptop is all Spanish configuration and the other all English. Nothing from Mackintosh. All run on Windows, but my "main" PC has the oldest version, XP, because otherwise I wouldn't be able to use some of my older SW. It's a bit of a nuisance because sometimes I have to switch to a more recent version (W7, I agree with Mario that it's not worth upgrading to W8 or higher), for example if I want to be able to view hyperlinks correctly. That's really the only drawback.
I do wish SW companies would stop foisting new "improved" upgrades on us, as they invariably turn out to be more bother than they are worth.
