In the clouds Sep 14, 2015

Having now lost faith in Wikileaks, I send it all to Google Translate instead

There is no option for - I do not store my work at all. Sep 14, 2015

As that would be a complete violation of confidentiality and most of my agreements with clients / agencies.

I "wipe my server clean" at the end of each month. TMs included (although I rarely create them anyway).

I realize that I am in the minority with this, but my clients appreciate it.

Basically, I store work-related data both on hard drive and clouds. As for the cloud hierarchy, it looks like this (ultimate accessibility and protection from whatever-can-happen-with-my-files).

A combination... Sep 14, 2015

Some old files (translations + source documents) are either stored on my computer or on an external hard drive + my Dropbox. Any ongoing work is saved on a flash drive at the end of the day. All the other old files were burned on CDs some years ago. One of these days I'll have a good look at them...

It has to be a combination, surely? Sep 14, 2015

Otherwise you have no backup at all.

Are you kidding? Sep 15, 2015

I cannot believe there are still people who do not have at least one back-up of their files! I'm astonished to find out 35% of the professional translators I know only store their files in their computers??

I make one back-up of my recent files in a cloud every other day, one back-up of all my files on and external HD at least once a month, and just to make sure, another general back-up in a DVD about twice a year.

Now, my dear Jeff Whittaker, there must be something very wrong with your answer. I'm really sorry if you throw your intellectual property in the garbage every month. But you're not a 'minority', as you mentioned. You are probably the only citizen in the entire world who does such an insanity.

In 28 years of translation, I never had a single client verify if I had erased any files or request a statement of the kind. I signed NDAs all my life, and never ever did anyone mention any of its clauses thereafter. And even if they did, my work is my intellectual property. Of course I'm not allowed to share it or disclose other people's documents. But my work, in my media, is mine and untouchable. It's an invaluable equity no one dares to touch, if they intend to stay alive. I have every file I translated since 2002 stored, and my TM's/TB's with 5 backups since I installed a CAT. Erasing all that would hardly be suppressed by anything stupid I may have ever done in my entire life.
