There are lots of interesting courses out there, but as far as I am concerned, Service Marketing is not one of them!

Marketing Sep 29, 2015

Having lived in the land of free enterprise (America), I've seen the pros and cons of marketing. I used to love studying marketing, micromarketing, etc.

I have nothing against marketing per se, but against the abuses and unsupported claims, as well as the horrendous writing that passes for marketing writing around here (America, again).

Yes, I have translated pages and pages of marketing material. Some blurbs are witty, most are dross written by hacks, not proper writers of anything.

There is a marketing fever going on among the translators and interpreters associated with the American Translators Association these days: the obsession with social media, twittering every cafe latte expresso they sip, every conference room they enter, retweeting stuff unrelated to translation but still important causes for them, then taking offense if someone tweets back in disagreement.

There was a translators marketing club a couple of years back. One of its proponents (it's a married couple) worked as a translator for 5 (yes, just five) years, then got an MBA and considers herself an authority in translation marketing.

Since marketing is just a tool to effect sales, different people in different geographies may find some marketing techniques more useful than others.

I've taken quite a few and I have really enjoyed them. I was tired of working for bad agencies and I really just wanted to translate things that were interesting to me, not just what I managed to get from bidding here on Proz.

Mario, take heart! I would bet a very shiny penny that most of that stuff was search engine fodder and not intended to be read by human eyes

Of course, I could be totally wrong, to

Of course, I could be totally wrong, too.

Word of mouth is best Sep 29, 2015

Pleasing and attracting translation clients is an arcane art that doesn't lend itself to the blunt tools of marketing.

I have always relied on word of mouth and I've been busier than I wanted to be ever since I started freelancing 23 years ago.

There are so many methods of making easy money on the backs of the innocent, aren't there? Here is another one.

I said no, but actually... Sep 30, 2015

... I just remember that I forced myself to sit through the course offered here on Proz. I was not a happy camper after wasting all that time...

... in an environment where people would galdly teach the younger something they believed would be helpful to them. there was much less knowledge and information than what circulates all over nowadays, but it was freely shared.

Now, people want to charge when they have something they think is useful and they can teach. But they have something they can teach in five minutes, and transform it into two or four hours of course for some good bucks. So you pay for a two-hour lecture for a five-minute lesson.

I'm not sure there is anything good about that, Xará *

* Xará is the person that has the same first name as yours in Brazil.
