Dear members,

I am pleased to announce the release of the new ProZ.com "What I am working on" feature!

http://www.proz.com/wiwo/

This feature --tested over the last few weeks by members of the Certified PRO Network and others-- gives ProZ.com members a convenient way to share descriptions of the projects that they are working on. Translators are already using it to share interesting projects, thereby letting colleagues and potential clients know the type of work they do, while establishing a track record of the projects they have done.

To learn about this feature and to see project descriptions that have been shared publicly, visit http://www.proz.com/wiwo/

On behalf of the site team, I would like to thank those members who took time out of their schedules to help test and refine this feature. Further feedback and suggestions would of course be welcome.

So, ProZ.com members: What are you working on now? Please share! https://www.proz.com/wiwo/

Kind regards,

Lucia

Fascinating Aug 6, 2016

I had no idea this would be so interesting to read!

One suggestion: everything looks very "spread out" and an awful lot of scrolling is involved. I tend not to scroll, unless I know where the scrolling is going to end. I stopped reading the posts (interesting though they were) because for all I know there might be thousands and thousands.

One suggestion: it would help if the posts could be selected based on language pairs and various document types etc.

Confidentiality and competition issues Aug 7, 2016

From a technical point of view I'm really impressed how I can publish WIWO postings using CafeTran as a front end. But I can see confidentiality and competition issues, so this new feature is clearly something to be careful with.

Writing the posting:

Previewing it:

Neat feature, isn't it .

This morning I opened my profile and felt dumbfounded as it says "0 projects this translator has worked on"!!! Are you kidding, Proz? Or your aim is to get free of translators? I translate mainly medical texts and have signed NDAs with ALL agencies I work with. One of clauses in almost any NDA states that I may not mention the name of the client or title of a project anywhere. Without names and titles, it is an empty and pointless blaberring like "I work on 80 000 words project in nuclear physics".

Perhaps this feature is primarily intended for newbies, to show that they are available for new projects? I fail to see why established translators would want to disclose the specific projects they are working on. On the contrary, I see more risks than advantages.

"0 projects this translator has worked on" seems to be intended for deterring any potential clients who will not be interested in a translator who within 20 tears of practice has not worked on a single project.

This feature can be hidden from view on your profile page. Along with several other bits of information you may not wish to share.
Like the profile page itself, this newest feature could end up being abused by those creative souls who are always looking for ways to put themselves in the Proz spotlight and drum up business for themselves. Truth be damned.

Thanks. This line appears only to you, but it is very misleading. I'll have that fixed.

Some ideas Aug 8, 2016

http://www.proz.com/wiwo/

1. The fact that some people post twice tells me that there isn't sufficient feedback in the submission form to let a translator know that his post has been received.

2. I can see this feature degenerating into a chat feature very quickly. Already there are multiple posts by some members who don't post what they're actually working on, but post comments about their translation life in general. Perhaps a link underneath each post "Report abuse" or similar would be useful in the short run.

3. This UI is a bit confusing:

I entered some text in the field and then clicked the "Post" link, expecting my comment to be posted. But no, then the site took me to another page where I had to re-enter my comment and click a Post link a second time. Apparently I must click the arrow if I want to post, but... I can also click the Post link if I want to post, but not if I've entered a comment yet, or... or something like that.

4. If I copy the URL of a set of comments and paste it into another browser, I'm given no warning that what I see at that URL may not be what was at that URL when the link was copied. For example, if I copy this link:

https://www.proz.com/wiwo?start=300

...and send it to someone else, by the time they click that link, other content would be on that page. So my suggestion would be to count forwards, not backwards, when enumerating the posts in the URL.

5. For people who might later regret posting public comments, an option to change all of one's own posts from public to private with a single click would be useful.

6. I don't need a reminder to check the forums, but I would need a reminder to post to this page, otherwise I'll forget about it once the novelty of the testing phase wears off.

7. It would be nice to have notifications sent to my e-mail address of posts that may be relevant to me. For example, if I could choose to be notified of comments that relate to my language combination, or my country of residence, it would make things more interesting and would encourage me to participate more.

8. The CAT tool field unfortunately takes its data from the *outdated* list of CAT tools in ProZ.com's profile system. For example, it's not possible to specify Trados 2007 or Trados 2015 -- the only option available (since many years now) is "SDL TRADOS" (all uppercase, for some bizarre reason), and the CAT tools are not in any sensible order (e.g. alphabetical). Did SDL pay ProZ.com money to have their CAT tool at the top of the list?

9. Why only "Word count"? Not all jobs are measured in words. For a number of job types, I can provide an approximate number of hours that I'm going to spend on it, but no word count.

10. Why are the "terms" in much larger letters and why does it look like quoted text?

Whenever you see something new on your profile page, try "force visitor view" to see if it's also visible to visitors. In this case, it aint -- it's visible only to you.

I agree that it is confusing, but it doesn't mean what you think it means. It doesn't mean that there is a setting in your profile settings where you can make the posts private or public. It means that when you post something, then you can choose at that time whether or not to make the post private (only you can see it) or public (the whole world can see it).

WIWO on profile? Aug 8, 2016

Is there a way for WIWO entries to be shown on our profile?

Aha. But I have marked all my WIWOs as public. Anyway, if I look at the "visitor view" of my profile, they are not there. Are you sure there is no such setting?

WIWOs on profiles could be useful Aug 8, 2016

Especially if they showed as a compact list with dates.

Of course people do have to be careful about confidentiality, but if they are completely generic - 'updating a website' or 'protocol for a clinical trial' or 'articles of association', even the most paranoid clients cannot seriously claim they reveal anything confidential.

On the other hand, they do give an idea of what kind of work a particular translator takes on, and this is important in our marketing.
