What's your favorite non-CAT software? Thread poster: Rita Translator
|
I'm just curious about what software you all are using (besides CAT tools) that you find helpful. Examples might be Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Translation Office 3000, etc.
So what's the non-CAT software you can't live without as a professional translator?

Great for converting PDFs into Word and well worth the price.
Thunderbird is great for mail, keeping track of jobs and the calendar, free too.

Abbyy Finereader as it does things I couldn't otherwise do.
PerfectIt as it makes what I do best so much easier and quicker, and it spots inconsistencies that I would probably miss (me being only human and all that).

TO3000, XBench, ChangeTracker and IntelliWebSearch all the time.
Xplorer2 Ultimate is my file browser on Windows (file browswer but also great to search for files and content).
(but Spotlight on my macbook is the best).

Does wonders with (non-scanned) PDF files. You can basically export all text as XML and then import it after translation in any CAT tool. With some clicking and dragging for adjustments after import, and if you have appropriate fonts (or, ideally, the exact same fonts), you produce a fully translated, nice-looking final target PDF.
Dragon Naturally Speaking | Sep 15, 2016 |
My Dragon speech recognition software: it has its quirks, but overall it is truly a marvellous invention, especially on those days when my fingers just don't seem to want to behave!! (I am not a gifted typist)

I use IntelliWebSearch all day long.
Copernic Desktop Search | Sep 15, 2016 |
For locating files in which I have used or encountered a word on previous occasions, or for finding files by searching for a word that they contain.

Everybody who has a Mac might want to check this out.
It's kind of hard to describe what it does, but it gives me absolute control over all shortcuts and allows me to automate various tasks. It has saved me countless hours and is one of the main reasons why I don't suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome yet.

To take real advantage of it, you also need a hardware tool like this: http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-keyboards-keypads/razer-nostromo ▲ Collapse
It's French spellchecker, grammar-checker, style-checker, etc. It throws up false positives, but it still always catches things I'm missed. Also great for transforming thousands of numbers e.g. 1,000,000.00 to the French style (1 000 000,00) all in one go, hunting down double spaces and spaces before commas, periods, etc. Basically it's like grammarly but in French<...
