Poll: How often do you use print translation resources? Thread poster: ProZ.com Staff

I use my English-Dutch-English agricultural dictionaries for at least half of my translation assignments
[Edited at 2018-06-05 08:37 GMT] | | | Less and less often.... | Jun 5, 2018 |
But each time I do pick up a hard copy dictionary or thesaurus, I am reminded how much I like them and how useful they are resolve to refer to them more often....and then I forget them again. What is missing online is the chance to stumble across words accidentally and follow different pathways. | | | Other (from hardly ever to often) | Jun 5, 2018 |
It depends on the subject matter, on the degree of the difficulty of the text and on the linguistic pair…
P.S. It also depends on my mood: some days I'm smarter than other days...

I still have a large collection of hardcopy dictionaries and other resources. Some of them fill a need that simply cannot be met using online tools. I've gone into this subject in detail in response to other similar Quick Poll questions. I'm happy to have both types at my disposal. | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 16:41 Spanish to English + ...
I initially understood the question to be about printing texts out on paper, for example for a final revision, or sending instead of by electronic means.
However, I stand corrected.
I do occasionally still consult my Alcaraz legal dictionary, and I also have a large Beigbeder-Atienza technical dictionary, although to tell the truth I usually find online resources more reliable than the latter. I also didn't understand the poll question initially, and thought it referred to the frequency of printing out translation resources, which is 'never' in my daily routine.
As Muriel points out above, you can sometimes find an opinion in a hard copy version that is unique, and which gives you an insight that you may not have considered before. That's why people ask Kudoz questions, essentially, to glean as much information as possible from multiple opinions. | | | Mario Freitas Brazil Local time: 12:41 Member (2014) English to Portuguese + ...
I haven't seen a paper dictionary in years. Using a paper dictionary when you are sitting in front of a computer connected to the internet is like leaviing your house to take a bath in the river outside when you have a hot shower inside. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: How often do you use print translation resources?
