Work not only has been decreasing in the number of words but also in the number of jobs and has been as irregular as ever. July/August are usually some of my best months (I don’t take summer vacations) and this year July was so, so and August was good (although I invoiced 25% less than last year), September has been terrible. As we have still a week till the end of the month, we'll see what the rest brings...

Nope. Just the reverse. Legal clients flying in. Medical clients hopping on. Literature also popping in.

Cheap competitors—aren't they all going to school now?

I mean, they can still translate after school because MT does 99% of the work for them (plus, their customers are often incompetent and ready to pay for translations that stand way below par, as long as they are cheap). I can't say how things are going in the freelance market; my situation is different because I translate and edit translations for huge companies that are working on huge bilingual projects. Don't think they will stop working on them in the near future
