I'm sorry to hear that Nesrin, but very glad to hear that I'm not alone. The translation world seems to be going crazy at the moment. (not that I'm compaining of course) | | | vixen Greece Local time: 13:35 English to Dutch + ...
Watching one particular soap series (usually recorded on tape during the daytime and played back when it suits me) really helps me to wind down, much to my husband's astonishment and slight annoyment.
Reading, attempting to play the guitar, other hobbies or taking a bath are also great options!

I like to reread my favorite authors (Clarke, Heinlein, K. Dick, Vance, Sturgeon, etc.) or watch a nice program like Stargate, Battlestar Galactica or Farscape on TV or DVD.
It helps me "escape" from reality for a while.

I answered OTHER because it really depends. Sometimes I cook as I find it extremelly relaxing and creative, and above all useful - my family members always appreciate it. Sometimes a favourite sitcom or a short walk help to recuperate the drained energy. Once a week I go to a dance class with my boyfriend, which helps to forget all job-related issues altogether.

However, I must agree with other colleagues: very often the computer is virtually the last thing you see at the end of the day, and it does not seem right to me. so I've decided to set some limits - long working hours are allowed only on the weekdays, whereas the weekend is MY time which I spend with my closest people. I am not saying I don't sometimes work on weekends, but only in exceptional cases. ▲ Collapse | | | Rebecca Hendry United Kingdom Local time: 11:35 Member (2005) Spanish to English + ... I still find it quite hard to move away from the computer though, and I tend to come back to it every now and again to check my emails etc...

N.B. Food we cook ourselves, to relax from translating!
I agree with Ilona, there is a life beyond translation. We try to work to survive, not the other way round.

I also cook, knit, or read, but nothing beats the hot tub for relaxation.

It depends - and quite often i relax in the day and work long evenings instead. I work better under pressure - self-induced pressure, that is!
Ask me not how I unwind after a long day, Frances, ask me how I unwind after a long month! A trip to Surrey, perhaps? ;o)
Good poll, btw! You've highlighted an important issue. Thanks!

Glad to see a fellow martial artist here.
I also selected sports, which is what I do most evenings. I also noticed that if I translate all day, I usually want to spend my evenings around other people. When I interpret at a conference, all I want is to come home and enjoy the quiet. I think most translators/interpreters can relate to that. | | | Silvina Matheu Argentina Local time: 08:35 Member English to Spanish + ... It depends... | Feb 28, 2007 |

I normally read at the end of the day. On my night table, I always have a novel, the latest Reader's Digest magazine or a crossword puzzle book. So I jump into bed, turn on the night lamp and read something to relax; eventually I fall asleep... | | | Pages in topic: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: How do you unwind at the end of a long day?
