There is no end... Feb 28, 2007

The last thing I see before closing my eyes is my computer shutting down...

How sad!

I'm sorry to hear that Nesrin, but very glad to hear that I'm not alone. The translation world seems to be going crazy at the moment. (not that I'm compaining of course)

Depends... Feb 28, 2007

Watching one particular soap series (usually recorded on tape during the daytime and played back when it suits me) really helps me to wind down, much to my husband's astonishment and slight annoyment.

Reading, attempting to play the guitar, other hobbies or taking a bath are also great options!

Depends Feb 28, 2007

Often good food, sometimes sport, sometimes going out, sometimes playing a game on the computer, sometimes reading... The one not excluding the others

A good Sci Fi novel or TV program Feb 28, 2007

I like to reread my favorite authors (Clarke, Heinlein, K. Dick, Vance, Sturgeon, etc.) or watch a nice program like Stargate, Battlestar Galactica or Farscape on TV or DVD.

It helps me "escape" from reality for a while.

There is LIFE beyond translation Feb 28, 2007

However, I must agree with other colleagues: very often the computer is virtually the last thing you see at the end of the day, and it does not seem right to me. so I've decided to set some limits - long working hours are allowed only on the weekdays, whereas the weekend is MY time which I spend with my closest people. I am not saying I don't sometimes work on weekends, but only in exceptional cases.

Usually a combination... Feb 28, 2007

... of good food, good wine, good company, watching TV, going to the gym or cinema.

I still find it quite hard to move away from the computer though, and I tend to come back to it every now and again to check my emails etc...

Good food + good wine... Feb 28, 2007

... but before that, sport (karate + walking with the dog).

N.B. Food we cook ourselves, to relax from translating!

I agree with Ilona, there is a life beyond translation. We try to work to survive, not the other way round.

Nesrin, have you already thought about adopting a pet? The last thing you would see then beofre closing you eyes would be his face near you in bed, not the PC...

relaxing bath was as close as the survey got... Feb 28, 2007

but it's really scotch in the hot tub right before bed

I also cook, knit, or read, but nothing beats the hot tub for relaxation.

It depends Feb 28, 2007

It depends - and quite often i relax in the day and work long evenings instead. I work better under pressure - self-induced pressure, that is!

Ask me not how I unwind after a long day, Frances, ask me how I unwind after a long month! A trip to Surrey, perhaps? ;o)

Good poll, btw! You've highlighted an important issue. Thanks!

Glad to see a fellow martial artist here.

I also selected sports, which is what I do most evenings. I also noticed that if I translate all day, I usually want to spend my evenings around other people. When I interpret at a conference, all I want is to come home and enjoy the quiet. I think most translators/interpreters can relate to that.

Reading Feb 28, 2007

I normally read at the end of the day. On my night table, I always have a novel, the latest Reader's Digest magazine or a crossword puzzle book. So I jump into bed, turn on the night lamp and read something to relax; eventually I fall asleep...
