Today I have been struggling with a technical manual, that has been formatted rigidly into pages. When I have finished one page it can disappear completely. And if the content is more than the page takes, the rest is not visible.
Is there anything global I can do except copy each page content into a new file leaving the page breaks behind?

Hello.

Try using View-->Print Layout when editing.

Good luck.

Most likely they have set every page in a text box Jul 7, 2004

I´ve had something similar...
I do not know about any automated and simple method to get rid of this, but still keeping the formatting.
What you can do, is move some text from one textbox to another or insert an intermediate page between two pages and copy the text, which is too long for the previous page, on this page.

Jerzy

Linking/adding text boxes Jul 8, 2004

If Jerzy is right, you might want to try linking the text boxes, or even adding some extra ones (therefore extra pages) for boxes where the translation doesn't fit. Or you could use a smaller font size, maybe.

To link text boxes, right-click the first box and you will get that command on the pop-up menu. This will let the text "overflow" from one text box to the next without it being hidden beyond the borders of the text box.

Hope that helps!

Sara

Its a table, not a textbox! Jul 8, 2004

I tried Sara's advice and noticed, that the whole document is a table, cell height = 21,98 cm. That explaines everything. Now I don't know if I can extract the whole text without the table cells, it would be useful to be able to do that also otherwise. But fortunately its only 30 pages, I'm going to extract the content page after page and make a new document without the table.
Thank you all!

Just let us know if you'd like someone to send you some aspirin! Jul 8, 2004

Heinrich,

Glad to hear that you figured out how the document was created. A table! Incredible.

People do all kinds of strange things to format their documents in Word, then we, the translators, must clean up the mess!!

I still see some amazing feats of (mis)alignment using TAB or, worse, the good old space bar!!

I guess the benefit is that we get to learn things about MS Word that we never dreamed of!

Good luck with the rest of you

Convert the table to text Jul 8, 2004

You can convert the table to text (Table - Conversion - Table to text) and then, when you are ready with the translation, you can convert it back (using the other option at the end of the same path: text to table).

Please note, however, that if there are several paragraphs in one cell, you might need to add to each "end-of-cell" paragraph some special symbol (usually, the USD or JPY signs are excellent for that) and then, for the conversion, you can indicate that sign in the appropr

(Otherwise, the default option is Enter or Tab for delimitation.)

It must have been a nightmare to see you translation disappear in the cyberspace - thanks for pointing out that such problems sometimes also occur.

Yes, never again such a file, please! Jul 9, 2004

But now its done. At the final stage when comparing to the original I noticed again two chapters missing, but fortunately I had used a CAT tool and just inserted the original text and did it again out of the TM.
Still its strange that at the end of a table cell all text vanishes, some bug in the CAT toll must be involved too. If the table row is as high as the page, it shouldn't matter, at least part of the stuff should stay visible. Or what do you think?
Regards
Heinrich
