Hi dear Proz members

I have been offered a job as a part time translator in a bank and I am to choose between getting paied per page or receive a fixed salary for a certain number of jobs(to be decided) per month. I do not know which to choose or what are the pros and cons of each of the choices? which is better money wise and career wise?

Regards
IOMS

I'm a little confused here, IOMS. Will you be a salaried employee, with a contract of employment? Your terminology implies that ('job as a part-time translator', 'fixed salary'). But then, it's unusual in that case to be given the choice of how you are paid, and indeed to be paid on any basis other than your time.

If it's a freelance assignment, but on a regular basis (and at their premises, perhaps?), then I suppose everything boils down to how much work there will be on offer. If neither you nor the bank really know the answer to this, you need things to be fixed on something that gives you adequate income for your time. This can best be done by time or by words, IMO. Words can be thought of in terms of standard pages, of course, and time is normally expressed in hours in our business - I imagine either would work reasonably well for you. But if you don't know the exact size of a 'job', then it would be extremely difficult to put a price on it, and it would be unfair to you if most of the jobs turned out to be larger, and unfair to the bank if the inverse occurred.

HTH

Sheila

I'd take the fixed rate Sep 18, 2012

You have to make sure that it's an acceptable rate. If you can get an acceptable fixed rate then:
1) in a month where there's little work, you still get your money
2) if the bank wants you to do more than your quota, they have to pay extra
3) as you get faster and more practised, the job becomes more and more profitable

But it depends on negotiating a reasonable rate to begin with.

Good luck!

The best choice for your future Sep 18, 2012

In my opinions, You should choode the fixed salaries
You will get salaries when you do nor have anything to do
The bank will give youInsurance, and other things that can support for your life.
You can have extra money when you work in night shift

Good luck

Mervyn

I thought at the outset that this may have been an unusual type of job, something between a part-time employee and a freelancer. But it appears that it's a normal freelancing contract, just regular. In that case, I would be a little too cynical to accept a job where they only pay you a certain amount of money per month. I know that in theory, they pay more if they go over the limit, but somehow, like Mervyn, I can't see that happening.
