Discussion

Tuğgen Šmajer Dec 22, 2009:
Bulgur is indeed Turkish. I agree with Cagdas. I live in the UK and regularly purchase it in supermarkets. It says "Bulgur wheat" on the package, if it's any help?
Murat Baş Oct 24, 2009:
Often confused with cracked wheat, "bulgur" differs in that it has been pre-cooked.
Balaban Cerit Oct 23, 2009:
bulgur is turkish as Silvia and Çağdaş commented below
Silvia Killian Özler Oct 23, 2009:
Etymology Etymology from İsmet Zeki Eyuboğlu:

BULGUR
Greek: pligouri
Persian: bülgûr

In Greek, plege (hitting, crushing) becomes plegouri – pligouri (crushed, beaten, broken) and then becomes pulgur – pilgur / bulgur.
The word came to the Greek language from ancient Anatolian languages. Wheat was cultivated in Anatolia long before it was known in the west. Some linguistics experts claim that the word bulgur is Turkish.
Cagdas Karatas Oct 23, 2009:
Bulguru Gaynadırlar Bulguru kaynatırlar,
Serine yaylatırlar,
Bizde adet böyledir
Güzeli oynatırlar
çirkini söyletirler.

Fidayda Ankaralı fidayda
Beş yüz altın yedirdim bir ayda
Gitti de gelmedi ne fayda
Başını da yesin bu sevda.

Dama çıkma baş açık,
Arpalar kara kılçık,
Eğer gönlün var ise
Giy babucu yola çık.
Silvia Killian Özler Oct 23, 2009:
Bulgur is Turkish! The word "bulgur" is and means the same thing in Turkish. I can research its roots if you like, but probably the word went from Turkish to English, like "yogurt".
