You can change adjective for any suitable similar one. The key is the second word - he means to say that they concentrate on insignificant, irrelevant, unimportant detail (and do so with misplaced sense of self-importance, self-righteousness).

I actually did in the comment (self-important). As I said I believe it's the second word that's important here. OK, perhaps I should have put "self-important" as my primary choice if it makes you feel better.

My translation is based on the meaning of the word "божень"as"лицемер,льстец" rather than making any assumptions about background or beliefs of people with a name "Божен", which is not a common Russian name in the first place. Thank you for your question.
