personally personal freedom you can pretty much do what you want
I enjoy the job too very much
money is not always great but I think that the outlook and perception of the profession will gradually improve as long as more and more translators do not accept to work for peanuts, and I think the profession is getting gradually more and more professional | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 06:01 Spanish to English + ...
of most of the above, EXCEPT for "growth", which I don't necessarily perceive as a positive thing, either in personal or geoeconomic/ecological terms. | | | Me too (small is beautiful...)! | Oct 3, 2011 |

Other: the possibility of being a "stay at home" mom | Oct 3, 2011 |
Hi,
I feel/think my teenagers need me at home, but they also need a mom who works and produces income, so being a feelancer allows me to be both: the stay at home mom my kids need and the bread winner of the home.
Have a wonderful week everyone!

Guys, please.
When the question is to choose your 'greatest' motivation, the option a 'combination of the above' is not a valid answer.
Mine is personal freedom by the way: I can quietly work without being bothered by an incompetent boss. Also, working harder means earning more money | | | Personal freedom | Oct 3, 2011 |
Definitely personal freedom.
It makes such a big difference to be my own boss, even though I probably actually work more hours and harder than I would if I were employed by someone.
I am actually much more motivated when I am in full control.
And it's nice to be able to take a day off and even go away for a couple of days if I need to without counting how many days of holidays I have left in my year's "allowance".

As long as I can survive with the money I earn in this job, I wouldn't change it for the world. ▲ Collapse | | | I said a combination | Oct 3, 2011 |
the money is a motivator because you have to keep it flowing in so you have to keep working!
but the personal freedom, being able to work on my own and not have to deal with commuting, bad weather and bad bosses...it's so worth it.

I think I have really started being happy at work when I started being a freelancer and doing what I like most. It has been also a way to find a real balance between my different lives : mom, wife, working girl. Money is important but freedom has no price.

Assuming that in my view every job has its pros and cons,
as a freelance translator, freedom is certainly important, then the fact that it's you managing every aspect of the job and that there isn't a boss to tell you what to do, no rushes in the morning and jammed in the traffic, the possibility to decide, assignments permitting (or not!), when you go on holidays, the freedom to move and follow professional courses in your field whenever you want without asking for permission, etc... but the greatest motivation to me is the satisfaction I get from what I do, because this is the profession I have always longed for, though its negative aspects such an apparently or real sort of isolation from the world, which can, yet, easily be resolved with an ability to arrange things so as to have more "outdoor" contacts.
I am a translator to the bone and happy with it.
Greetings to all,
