Hello there,
I am looking for a monitor to use in combination with my laptop. I already own an old monitor, but its image quality is rather poor, so I would like to upgrade my setup. Since I am working several hours a day, I would like a monitor that can show texts in a crisp way and doesn't cause eye fatigue. Ideally, it should have a 24" screen.

How old Aug 7

How old is your laptop? If it is quite old, then no matter how nice your monitor, it won't be able to display contain on the monitor using all of the monitor's advanced, fancy features. E.g. if the monitor supports a high refresh rate, but your laptop can't produce it, then you won't get it.

Lenovo Ideapad (2019) Aug 7

Hi, thanks for replying. I have a Lenovo IdeaPad from 2019; it has 8 gb of RAM, intel i5 and an SSD.
I don't remember the exact model, I am not at home now.

I have considered the role played by the laptop, but I don't know to what extent it has an influence; anyway, it looks good in its native screen.

I am not interested in frame rates, to be honest, I just care about the definition of the text

Ergonomics is key Aug 7

I don't know what your main criterion is, but mine was height adjustability when I was looking to buy a monitor in Nov 2022. I had started to get neck pains because I was looking slightly downward to my laptop, so that's when I knew I had to buy a monitor. But interestingly enough there were very few height-adjustable monitors in the market at the time! (I'm really not sure why)
I had bought this one mostly due its USB-C connection in addition to its height adjustability: https://www.philips.com.tr/c-p/243B9_00/usb-cli-lcd-monitoer (It's out of production at this point). But I, for some reason, couldn't work out the USB-C connection and ended up returning it. Then I ended up buying this one, which I'm quite happy with: https://www.benq.com/tr-tr/monitor/home/gw2480t/buy.html It doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but it works really well for me (I mostly do office work).
Although bear in mind that I still place a book under it (just a 2.5 cm more lift) on my desk when it's at it's max. height of 51.5 cm, which allows me to look in the middle of the screen. I certainly don't agree with the "top of the screen" school of thought, which some say are outdated anyway: https://www.hse.gov.uk/msd/dse/good-posture.htm. All I can say is I'm just not comfortable that way, so I guess it's a personal thing too.

Sorry, you asked for a suggestion for monitors and I turned it into sthg about ergonomics! But you should also agree that this lady on the Dell ultra site has already started to get neck pains in that position:)):

I agree Aug 7

Actually, I am all for ergonomics. I think that having a screen at the right height, allows you to have a better posture overall, it's not good just for your neck. So adjustable height is also a feature I would like to have.
Thank you for linking those model, I will look for monitors with similar specs

Resolution Aug 7

should be the key IMHO. One should be looking at 4K or even 5K nowadays.

Just an example I got and feeling great - https://www.msi.com/Business-Productivity-Monitor/Modern-MD271UL - and it was a deal, though not height adjustable.

Curved Samsung Aug 7

I am using a curved monitor Samsung C24F390. I am quite modest when it comes to technical gadgets. This monitor works for me without any issues for a couple of years now. I use it both for work (connected to my 13-year-old laptop) and for gaming (connected to a proper gaming PC).

Dot pitch is important Aug 8

Boris Kimel wrote:

My [limited] experience is that gaming 4K monitors typically have a too small dot pitch for translation work.

I have a 2560 x 1440 (QHD) 27" monitor (Brilliance 272B) and it's got a nice dot pitch of 0.23. If I had wanted a bigger screen with a similar dot pitch, then it would have to be a 43" monitor at 3840 x 2160 (UHD). However, monitors of that size are often not high adjustable, so if you want an adjusted height, you'd have to fit a bracket (attached to your desk or to a wall). 43" monitors typically also have very wide feet that protrude in front of the monitor, which takes up a lot of space on a desk.

Note that most monitors advertised as 4K are in fact not 4K, but UHD. 4K is 4096 pixels wide. UHD is 3840 pixels wide. UHD is plenty for translation work.

Pitch too small? Aug 8

How does this look? Mine should be 0.15 but I do not feel it too small, or even just small. Or are there scaling issues?

ASUS for me Aug 8

ASUS ProArt

I am using 2 ASUS Pro monitors from the old PB series (24'' and 27''; "B" stands for Business I suppose).
They are non-glaring, have good color calibration, sharp definition, do not cause eye fatigue, are pivotable and vertically adjustable. And the pricing was good too.
They were among the monitors with best ratings on the specialized Prad.de website - I rely on them when it comes to monitors, PCs etc. (using Google translate you could check this site for current best candidates, including the ASUS PA series). https://www.prad.de/test-kaufberatung/top-10-bestenlisten/monitore/
Here's the rating for one of my PB monitors: https://www.prad.de/testberichte/test-monitor-asus-pb248q/6/#Fazit
If the new PA series are of the same quality, I'd suggest to opt for one of these models.

If you have a laptop that you regularly work on that also has a 1.5 dot pitch, then you would not notice anything wrong. The difference between 0.15 and 0.23 is very noticeable, but it depends on the OP's current laptop. A 15" Full HD laptop has a dot pitch of 0.17, which is quite similar to your 0.15.

Could you elaborate further on the concept of dot pitch? I would like to know what that is, and whether that number should be low or high. By the way, my laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad 330s-15ikb, and it was around 600 euros when I bought it 5 years ago.

My MacBook Air Aug 8

has a 13" display which is set to "More Space" mode which they designate as 1680 × 1050 scale-wise, while the pixel resolution is 2560 × 1600. So it is 227 ppi with a 0.11 dot pitch. The cool thing is that I do not see any pixels at all - which would not be the case with 1920 × 1280 and a 0.27 dot pitch of a typical 24" display.

This will make your work comfortable and eliminate your need for a "real estate monitor" (or two, or four, curved, of course, and costing 9000 of money each). Therefore, you will be comfortable with a laptop on a stand with a keyboard on a tray or shelf.

The best laptop screens are made for/by Dell, their laptops are great too, hardware and the drivers/firmware support. The good ones are rather expensive, but if you look at the "post-leasing laptops" you will find a great laptop, with a scratch on the body, 12-24-month guarantee, and very good performance. Such a laptop costs 300-400 euros, this is fairly low for the features they offer.

CAT tools and internet do *not* need all the stuff that is packed into an average laptop aimed at gaming, video editing, and other heavy-load stuff.

HTH
