Disease Description:
We all are aware of the fatal effects cancer can have in people yet we tend to be less aware of its effects on our dogs. Cancer in dogs or any pets are, of course, extremely serious.
An apparent manifestation of cancer is a tumor. A tumor is a general term for swelling– it is a solid mass, lump, or bump developed from an abnormal growth of cells. Tumors can either be benign or malignant. Benign denotes a condition that is harmless meanwhile, malignant means to become increasingly worse and to substantially lead in death.
Benign tumors don’t grow rapidly, does not occupy or destroy adjacent tissues, and does not reach to other parts of the body. On the other hand, malignant tumors are implied as life-threatening cancers. These tumors are the equal opposite from benign tumors— they grow rapidly, destroy neighboring tissues, and reach various body parts/organs.
Tumors can be found on your dog’s skin, kidneys, bones, liver, lungs and other various parts.
Infectious Status:
Cancer is not usually infectious however this is not completely unknown. There have been cases of parasitic cancer or transmittable cancer but this rarely occurs. Parasitic cancer or transmittable cancer is typically where there is a gathering of cancer cells that is spread from animal to animal.
Causes:
Cancer can have multiple causes but in reality aside from certain viruses such in the case of Skin Papilloma (or Canine Viral Papilloma) caused Canine Viral Papilloma Virus—the causes of many types of cancer are still unknown or have not been medically proven to a level of confidence that allows veterinarians to directly link specific causes of cancer.
However, cancer can be influenced by predisposing factors such as age, sex, external factors, and breed.
Breeds Commonly Affected:
Boxers, Cocker Spaniels, Boston terriers and Wire-haired Fox Terriers.
Other breeds can also suffer from Cancer/Tumors.
Key Symptoms:
Signs and symptoms for cancer are based on the organ on which tumor is located. Tumors or various forms of swelling are hallmarks symptoms for cancer detection. These symptoms can be likely observed through an at-home physical examination which can be carried out by scoping and palpating the suspected body part.
However, only a biopsy on tumors can definitively answer whether your animal is suffering from cancer and whether or not it is benign or malignant.
• Skin Cancer. Wart-like growths; lumps; blood clot; cysts; fat-producing tumors; neck and head tumors; flat tumors; and reddish, hairless, ulcerated tumors.
• Soft Tissue Cancer. Palpable tumors on groin, armpit, neck or chest. Other tumors will also appear on the rib area while others suffer from an abdominal swelling.
• Breast Cancer. Painless lumps on the breast area. Large lumps appear on the area nearest to the groin.
• Bone Cancer. Swelling on the affected limb. A lump is also apparent on the face due to a tumor present on the skull.
• Urinary Tract Cancer. Difficulty in urination due to the tumor which obstructs passage of urine.
• Cancer of Reproductive Organ/s. Enlarged testicle; ulcerated, cauliflower-like tumors on the vulva/penis; and swelling of the abdomen or vulva.
Additional Key Symptoms/Complications:
• Skin Cancer. Susceptibility to secondary skin infections, trauma, ectoparasites, and other skin conditions.
• Soft Tissue Cancer. Tumors of this type spread on vital organs of the body usually the lung and liver.
• Breast Cancer. A condition called Inflammatory Cancer is one of the additional signs suffered from this form of disease.
• Bone Cancer. Pain and bone fractures often are complications encountered from this type of cancer.
• Urinary Tract Cancer. Formation of kidney or urinary bladder stones leading to a painful urination. Bacterial infections will also occur.
• Cancer of the Reproductive Organ. Large tumors on the genital tract often cause obstruction on the birth canal thus birth difficulty happens. This is manifested by an intense yelping and licking of the vulva during whelping

Somos todos conscientes de los fatales efectos que el cáncer puede tener en las personas, pero sin embargo tendemos a ser menos conscientes de los efectos que puede tener en nuestros perros. El cáncer en los perros o en cualquier otro animal es, por supuesto, un tema extremadamente serio.
Una manifestación aparente del cáncer es un tumor. Un tumor es un término general para indicar una inflamación – es una masa sólida, bulto, o protuberancia que se ha desarrollado a partir de un crecimiento anormal de las células. Los tumores pueden ser bien benignos o malignos. La palabra benigno denota una condición inocua, mientras que maligno se refiere a que empeorará progresivamente y básicamente llevará a la muerte.
Los tumores benignos no crecen con rapidez, no ocupan ni destruyen tejidos adyacentes, y no invaden otras partes del cuerpo. Por otra parte, los tumores malignos son implícitamente cánceres potencialmente mortales. Síntomas Principales:

• Cáncer de Pecho. Bultos indoloros en el área del pecho. Los bultos más grandes aparecen en la zona más cercana a la ingle.
• Cáncer de Huesos. Inflamación del miembro afectado. Se puede presentar un bulto en la cara asimismo debido a la presencia de un tumor en el cráneo.
• Cáncer de Vías Urinarias. Dificultades para orinar debido a que el tumor obstruye el paso de la orina.
• Cáncer de Órganos Reproductivos. Agrandamiento testicular; tumores ulcerados y en forma de coliflor en la vulva o el pene; inflamación en el abdomen o la vulva.
Síntomas Adicionales y Posibles Complicaciones:
• Cáncer de Piel. Propensión a las infecciones secundarias de piel, a traumas de piel, a los ectoparásitos, y a otras afecciones de la piel.
• Cáncer de Tejidos Blandos. Los tumores de este tipo se extienden por órganos vitales del cuerpo, normalmente los pulmones y el hígado.
• Cáncer de Pecho. Una afección denominada Cáncer Inflamatorio es uno de los síntomas adicionales que se sufren con esta variante de la enfermedad.
• Cáncer de Huesos. Este tipo de cáncer a menudo presenta complicaciones tales como dolores y fracturas de hueso.
• Cáncer de Vías Urinarias. Formación de piedras en los riñones o en la vejiga que resultan en micciones dolorosas. Se producen asimismo infecciones de tipo bacteriano.

Source text - Spanish Un nuevo enfoque del análisis de la conectividad ecológica a partir de redes basadas en la teoría de grafos
La aplicación de modelos de conectividad para el estudio de los procesos ecológicos y la dispersión de las especies ha constituido una herramienta innovadora de gran utilidad para la planificación y gestión de los recursos naturales (Urban & Keitt 2001, Sastre y de Lucio. 2004). Por ejemplo, estudios sobre metapoblaciones han puesto de manifiesto que el escenario en el que se encuadran las metapoblaciones juega un papel fundamental en su dinámica y en la dinámica interna de las poblaciones locales (Hanski 2004). Así pues, la conservación de la permeabilidad del paisaje se ha convertido en un aspecto clave para preservar el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas y garantizar la supervivencia de muchas especies.
Pocos elementos tienen tanta influencia sobre los patrones de cambio en el territorio y en la fragmentación de los hábitat como las vías de comunicación (Forman 1995). En la actualidad los procedimientos de EIA, y más recientemente de EAE, prestan una atención especial en implantar acciones destinadas a minimizar el efecto barrera de estas infraestructuras. Sin embargo, en pocas ocasiones se realiza una evaluación previa de las condiciones de permeabilidad del paisaje y de las necesidades básicas necesarias para mantener la conectividad de los sistemas naturales.
En este marco se ha desarrollado un proceso metodológico para el estudio y análisis de la conectividad en el territorio. Este método aborda dos aspectos diferentes: Por un lado se especifica un método de trabajo con el que construir una red de conexiones; por otro, se plantea un modelo, que utiliza los resultados de la red, con el cual se puede evaluar la conectividad de un paisaje y que no tiene en cuenta solamente la morfología de la red, si no que tiene en cuenta los procesos ecológicos.
Construcción de una red de conexiones
La metodología propuesta parte del trabajo realizado para el Seguimiento de las Afecciones del PEIT a los Espacios Naturales (2008). En este proyecto se creó un modelo de dispersión que integra los requerimientos ecológicos de las especies y las características del territorio. Se basa en los métodos SIG que utilizan superficies de fricción y el algoritmo de mínimo coste, ampliamente utilizados en estudios de conectividad (Saura et al. 2007, Singleton 2002) o para el establecimiento de corredores ecológicos (Beier 2008). Sin embargo, se detectaron algunos problemas y carencias, principalmente relacionados con la dificultad para identificar las conexiones concretas entre los núcleos. Se inició, entonces, un proceso para subsanarlas y mejorar el modelo, llegándose a la conclusión de que la mejor alternativa era evolucionar el modelo hacia un concepto de red, basado en la teoría de grafos.
Se ha concebido una red que representaría los principales corredores que utilizarían los individuos de una especie que para mantener relacionados sus núcleos de población en un paisaje concreto (Figura 1). Como cualquier red descrita desde la perspectiva de la teoría de grafos, está compuesta de dos elementos básicos, nudos u arcos. La diferencia con otros modelos de red utilizados en ecología del paisaje estriba en que se dan dos tipos de nodos, los núcleos y las bifurcaciones. Los núcleos son nodos asociados a áreas de hábitat donde se localizan las poblaciones, mientras que las bifurcaciones son nodos que representan puntos de cruce de caminos cuya función es la distribución de los flujos. Además, la configuración de la red es flexible, permitiendo la existencia de más de un camino que conecte directamente dos núcleos.
Translation - English A New Approach to the Analysis of Ecological Connectivity Using Networks Based on the Theory of Graphs.
The use of connectivity models for the study of ecological processes and the dispersion of species has constituted an innovative tool of great use in the planning and management of natural resources (Urban & Keitt 2001, Sastre y de Lucio 2004). To cite an example, some studies have shown that the scenario in which metapopulations are included plays a fundamental role in their dynamics, and in the internal dynamics of the local populations (Hanski 2004). Thus, the conservation of the landscape’s permeability becomes a key aspect, in order to preserve the functioning of the ecosystems and to guarantee the survival of many species.
Few elements have as much influence on the change patterns of the landscape and on the fragmentation of habitats as transportation infrastructures (Forman 1995). Nowadays, the proceedings of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), and more recently those of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (EAE), pay special attention to the implementation of actions, aimed at minimizing the barrier effect of these infrastructures. However, a previous assessment of the landscape’s permeability conditions, and of the basics needed in order to maintain the natural systems’ connectivity, is rarely made.
A methodological process has been developed within this framework, for the study and analysis of landscape connectivity. This method deals with two different aspects: on one side, a work methodology is specified, with which a connection network can be built. On the other side, a model is proposed, which takes the results from the network that can be used to assess a landscape’s connectivity, and not only takes into account the network’s morphology, but also the ecological processes.
Construction of a connection network
The proposed methodology sets off from the work carried out for the Impact Monitoring of the PEIT (Strategic Plan for Infrastructures and Transports) on the Special Areas of Conservation (2008). In this project, a dispersion model was created that incorporates the ecological requirements of the species and the landscape characteristics. It is based on GIS methods that use friction and the least-cost algorithm, which are widely used in connectivity studies (Saura et al 2007, Singleton 2002), or for the establishment of ecological corridors (Beier 2008). However, some problems and deficiencies were found, mainly related to the difficulty in identifying the specific connections among the local populations. A process was then started to amend and improve the model, and the conclusion was reached that the best alternative was to evolve the model towards a network concept based on graph theory.
A network has been devised that would represent the main corridors that individuals in a species would use in order to keep their local populations within a specific landscape (Figure 1). As with any other network described from the perspective of graph theory, it is made up of two basic elements: nodes and edges. The difference with other network models used in landscape ecology lies in that there are two types of nodes: groups and junctions. Groups are nodes that are associated to habitat areas where populations are located, while junctions are nodes that represent pathcrossing points whose function is the distribution of flows. Furthermore, the network configuration is flexible, allowing for the existence of more than one path to connect two groups directly.

Grade inflation parece un hecho frecuente en la evaluación de las prácticas clínicas de los grado en enfermería y puede influir en la calificación final. En este trabajo se exponen posibles causas de la grade inflation, sus consecuencias y estrategias para controlarla. Además se proponen tres métodos para estudiar la grade inflation y se discute su aplicación.

El aprendizaje clínico es un componente fundamental de la educación en enfermería en todo el mundo, de modo que las calificaciones de los alumnos durante las prácticas clínicas deben ser un claro reflejo de las competencias adquiridas, siendo al menos, igual de importantes que las calificaciones teóricas.
Por otra parte, evaluar la adquisición de competencias en las prácticas clínicas es uno de los principales retos a los que todavía se enfrentan las Universidades (1). Grade inflation seems to be frequent in the evaluation of the Undergraduate Nursing degree clinical practicum, and may affect the final grade. This work presents the possible causes of grade inflation, its consequences, and strategies to control it. In addition, three methods are proposed for studying grade inflation, and their implementation is discussed.

Clinical learning is a fundamental component of nursing education throughout the world, so that the students’ grades during their clinical practicum should be a clear reflection of the acquired skills, being at least as important as the theory study grades.
On the other hand, evaluating the acquisition of skills during the clinical practicum is one of the major challenges that Universities still face (1.) I am an architect, with a keen interest in language since childhood. My family moved to the US when I was 11 years old, and it was then that I discovered how difficult it was sometimes to convey thoughts in a different language.
