Biographical / Historical Apr 26, 2020

I've just started David Grann's "Killer of the Flower Moon" about a series of murders of wealthy Osage people that took place in Osage County, Oklahoma in the early 1920s after big oil deposits were discovered beneath their land. Seems very interesting!

Normally I read poetry in my spare time, but due to the lockdown I have been unable to get to the Scottish Poetry Library. Accordingly, I am having to resort to my stockpile of books and am currently halfway through David Cameron's biography.

Fiction Apr 26, 2020

I’m almost at the end of the first of the four volumes of Elsa Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels. I started reading it when it was published in 2014 but stopped because I couldn’t keep track of all the characters. Now because of the lockdown and the lack of work, that is no longer a problem…

Wrong question Apr 26, 2020

The question "What are you reading right now?" perplexed me at the age of 7, and still perplexes me for the same reason: if I sit down with a book, I am unlikely to stop until I finish it.

So is he. Or did you mean his memoirs?

Have a Kindle with lots of books Apr 26, 2020

Once Amazon kindly offered me plenty of pieces, which I occasionally flipped through, checking interesting moments. Now it's A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. Quite entertaining, but I don't believe in time either.

Non-fiction: psychology Apr 26, 2020

For years now, I've been fascinated by psychology and sociology, and I've just started reading 'Loneliness' by John Cacioppo and William Patrick, two scientists who explore how loneliness and social isolation are perceived by our minds and, in turn, how they impact on the body - it's an enlightening read, especially during lockdown!

I have been immersed in Reader Come Home by Maryanne Wolf. She is a researcher on reading education and involved in a special school for children with dyslexia. First she describes the many intricate and interconnected processes that take place in the brain while we read. Then she goes on to argue that in this digital age, that is geared to skimming text for information, what may be lost is the deeper understanding that you get when you hold a book in your hand and read slowly. Then you can re-read certain parts, you get to understand the thoughts and actions of others and develop empathy. This kind of reading, or what she calls 'deep reading', is what is converted into lasting knowledge and attitudes, which digital reading for the purpose of acquiring information may not. This is especially important for young children, whose brains are still growing and developing. Digital reading is better introduced once the deeper reading process is well underway and then only in small amounts at a time.

I can only simplify it now but I found this a fascinating book, and I recommend it to anyone, especially those of you who have young children.

Fiction Apr 26, 2020

I have a Kindle app on my tablet, with loads of books, some good, some not so good (mostly downloaded free, I'm afraid).
Then as regards real books, a John Le Carré that I read when on the exercise bike and a fat tome by Ken Follett for reading in bed.

News Apr 26, 2020

The news has taken on a new level of relevance. I found out things like, "Can my children leave the house tomorrow?" and "When can I exercise outside?"

It's hard to get too interested in fiction and abstract information when the Spanish economy wavers on the brink of collapse, and we don't know how long we will be confined to our houses, when or if our kids will return to school, etc.

Yahoo news Apr 26, 2020

I have never been able to read more than 10 pages of any literary work since I became a freelancer. Just no time for that kind of reading.

Because I use Yahoo email, I read yahoo news every now and then.
