Hi all!

Do you know of any WhatsApp or Discord groups for translators? I'm looking for a place to discuss translation, expand my netword, offer work to colleagues with different language combinations than mines and ask questions about translation choices. (it can be based everywhere in the world)

Thanks!

WhatsApp Mar 7

Why WhatsApp? It seems heavily user-unfriendly for that purpose.

I'd have to agree. I think many younger users being more familiar with Discord could be a reason for preferring it for semi-informal networking and chat. Why anyone would want to use Whatsapp for anything is beyond me, but my local expat and foreigner communities are dead set on it for local networking and small ads.

I'm also not really happy with using Facebook (or any other social media) for work-related stuff. Even LinkedIn is just awful (unless you have the inexplicable need to find a life and success coach).

I suspect I start sounding like a dinosaur full of nostalgia for some olden times where work-related stuff didn't happen in chatrooms. I'll see myself out now. Sorry to OP for not really being able to contribute anything useful, but I'm also kind of curious about why this shift to chatroom-based ... everything?

TeamTranslator and Tradiscord Mar 7

Hi Manon,
I can warmly recommend two groups:
-TeamTranslator, which is a Slack-based group in English: https://www.team-translator.com/ (Conflict of interest disclaimer: I am part of the moderation team.)
-Tradiscord, which is in French: http://tradiscord.fr/

Have you tried some of the services available at ProZ.com, Manon? You may discuss translation-related issues here in the forums. The Translation art & business forum is full of such discussions, https://www.proz.com/forum?cat_group=translation

To expand your network you may propose a powwow in your area. Powwows are great to meet colleagues in person, exchange information and have fun. Just pick a date and a place (a coffee shop, a park, a restaurant, or any other place you like) and submit your proposal: https://www.proz.com/powwows . If you would like to network with colleagues worldwide you may also organize a virtual powwow.

If you would like to offer jobs to colleagues, or bring jobs to their attention, you may join the ProZ.com Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/46836864539 . Freelancers and outsourcers share jobs of interest to linguists there all the time.

Finally, to ask for possible translations of a term and discuss translation choices, there is KudoZ, https://www.proz.com/about/overview/kudoz/. KudoZ is provided as a complimentary service to translators and language enthusiasts and it is entirely free to use.

And if all of the above seems spreaded all over the place, and you would like to keep all these activities in one place (or at least most of them), you may join a team: https://www.proz.com/translation-teams/ (members can also create their own teams). ProZ.com translation teams are designed to assist cooperative groups of language professionals in acting as a single entity, collaborating on projects, sharing resources, quoting on jobs, and more.

Anyway, I'm sure there are other channels or groups out there, but I also know some ProZ.com features that are designed specifically for networking and sharing may not be known by all. So, I hope this post helps.

Have a nice evening!

Lu

P.S. (Can I join the TeamTranslator Slack-based group too, Matthieu? I'm ProZ.com staff, but I'm also a translator )

I'm part of two translator groups on Discord, one for pro translators in general and another for media localization. But I only know the invite link for the former: https://discord.gg/p5xB75ChZr
Feel free to join!

Hi Lucia,

Quoting from the group guidelines:

"By joining our Slack group, you confirm that you are a freelance translator and if you ever stop being a freelancer, you will remove yourself from the group or ask one of our moderators to remove you. Of course, if you start freelancing again, you are more than welcome to re-join!"

So, as long as you're a freelance translator, even part-time, you can join through the website!
