I did some active marketing at the very beginning (1985) in Brussels and built a list of the EC (EU now) institutions and agencies I was interested in working with and sent letters by snail mail (no email then) to all of them. My effort was quite successful just because this was a few months before Portugal entered the EC and there weren’t many Portuguese translators established in Brussels. The rest is history… | | |

Yes--as a part of my initial research and planning phase.
It didn't work as I thought, because my then-dreamjob appeared just a step to another dream job, which was another stepping-stone to something even better. However, the good preparation did help me to learn important things and meet useful people. | |

Tom, I hope you never want to learn Norwegian, Swedish or Danish. Ending such a sentence with a preposition is the only possibility in these languages.
