Why would anybody do this?
I’m one of those dinosaurs who don’t use CAT tools! | | | Yes frequently | Mar 26, 2020 |
with Trados packages:
I open them in Trados, play about a bit trying to move forward, get annoyed, then haul the lot to MemoQ and finish comfortably there.
Then sldxliff back to client.
open standards, xliff, tmx, and all that. Yes, sure.

My agencies use all kinds of CAT tools, but I prefer MemoQ. If possible, I export the project from the original tool, import it into MemoQ and complete it there, and then upload it to the original tool again. | | | Samuel Murray Netherlands Local time: 21:27 Member (2006) English to Afrikaans + ... Yes, I have, but I don't do it often. I do regularly use more than one CAT tool for a single job or a single file, but then I tend to end on the same CAT tool that I started on.
For example, a client sends me fully untranslated SDLXLIFF files, I open them in Trados, I copy source to target, close Trados, open the SDLXLIFF files in WFP3 (which converts them to TXML), use WFP3's bilingual review to convert the TXML files to WFC format, do the translation in WFC, convert the files back to TXML and then back to SDLXLIFF using WFP3, and then finally check the files in Trados before delivery.
But I think the poll asker is referring to jobs where you do not open the final file in the original CAT tool to check to see if the files "work" properly in that CAT tool. I rarely do that, because... I prefer to be able to know for sure.
A related issue is when you use one CAT tool purely for downloading or uploading the files. For example, you'd connect to a server project via MemoQ (because that's the only way to get the files), but then do the translation entirely in Trados, and afterwards, open MemoQ again... but without actually viewing the translated files in MemoQ, simply use MemoQ to upload the translations back to the client's server. In such a scenario, you could say that you did not "finish" it on MemoQ... but then... you did not "start" it on MemoQ either (-:

No, I have never done that.

I only use MemoQ.
However, when the client requires one of these lousy online platforms, I find it easier to export the file (or save it as html), translate in Memoq and reimport to their platforms (or copy and paste). Believe me, it takes a lot less time than using their disgusting platforms. So, in these cases, yes I start in one tool and complete the job in a second one.

I've done something similar, except I used OmegaT instead of MemoQ, because I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to upload my glossaries and TM to the online platform (and I'm not even sure that would have been wise, anyway). It was a relatively short document, so the copy/paste didn't take long. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Have you started a project on one CAT tool and finished it on another?
