IBM has made a functioning quantum processor available to the public over the internet.
Quantum computing is widely seen as an evolution of computer technology, which may allow for much faster calculations than today's machines.
The technology is still in its infancy, but one expert said it was a "small step" towards a useful quantum computer.
IBM said it hoped to see processors up to 20 times larger in the next decade.
Traditional computers process all their information using bits - information stored in tiny transistors that can either be on or off - interpreted as values of one and zero.
Quantum computing instead takes advantage of a mechanic called superpositioning that allows quantum bits - or "qubits" - to have values of one, zero, or both at the same time.
Researchers believe this core difference will eventually lead to powerful devices with processing power that will exceed the limits of classic computers.
IBM's quantum processor is located in its TJ Watson Research Centre in New York. Quantum processors are notoriously sensitive, so it is being kept at supercooled temperatures in a cryogenic refrigerator.
It has just five qubits that can be manipulated, but the company expects processors of 50-100 qubits to emerge within the next decade. General-purpose machines, which IBM calls "universal" quantum computers, will eventually use more than 100,000 qubits.

“We have successfully built a 20-qubit and a 50-qubit quantum processor that works,” Dario Gil, IBM’s vice president of science and solutions, told engineers and computer scientists at IEEE Rebooting Computing’s Industry Forum last Friday. The development both ups the size of commercially available quantum computing resources and brings computer science closer to the point where it might prove definitively whether quantum computers can do something classical computers can’t.

Thanks, Yueyin. That's good to know.
Unfortunately, such good news doesn't reflect in a company's stock price performance though.
I sincerely hope that the company eventually figures out a way to financially benefit from all the basic scientific research that it engages in over the years.

Good morning Yueyin and Steve,
I have no idea what you guys are talking about. Steve's comment does remind me though of the days when I was laid off from IBM and picked up by another Silicon Valley tech. company, where upon I was given 200 shares as an incentive or "match" as they call it. The initial price of some $11 a share went down to $0.005 when the .com bubble busted. The quarterly earnings reports of that stock keep coming, I just toss it every time when I get the mail. Now I don't even remember what the stock symbol is. That was before the housing bubble in 2008.

I too am in the dark when it comes to the subject of quantum computing. But IMO this video clip from the PBS Infinite Series gives a pretty good presentation in trying to explain the basic theory behind it ...
