I'm usually at my most productive between 9 AM and 1 PM - although these are the times I'm most likely to be interrupted. I can work in the evenings as well, although it gets very hot indoors in the summer months. I can set up a PC outdoors after dark if need be, but I haven't done that for at least a year, maybe two.
I agree with neilmac. I start my work at 9, finish by 1 and resume in the afternoon as needed, sometimes on the terrace. I enjoy both shifts, but the morning one is essential in order to not fall behind. I really love translation and linguistics, it’s an enjoyable lifestyle. | | | It differs a lot from day to day | Jul 28, 2020 |
I’m not easily distracted and in general I remain focused on my work the whole day, but it depends first of all on the number of interruptions: telephone, doorbell, outside noise (there is less traffic now because of the summer and Covid-19), etc. Being a late owl, the most productive time for me in general is mid-afternoon/evening, but it really depends on a lot of factors: quality of my sleep the night before (I don’t recover as easily as I did in my younger days), job deadline, complexity... I’m having longer than usual working days since the beginning of June and apparently things will not slow down in August as I have a few big jobs lined up already…
P.S. I prefer proofreading/editing/reviewing early in the day... ▲ Collapse

I can work early morning and at night. It's often more obvious when I don't hear the noise of distractions. | | | Mario Freitas Brazil Local time: 23:08 Member (2014) English to Portuguese + ...
The phone doesn't ring
The neighbors don't make noise
No traffic, horns, sirens
People don't interrupt my work
Incoming messages and e-mails don't interrupt my work

I can work at this period effectively because it's calm and my brain is fresh from the good night rest | | | Kay Denney France Local time: 03:08 French to English
When I'm alone.
That means, when I first get up because I'm always first up, then once my partner has gone off to work. He leaves late and comes home late, so that makes plenty of time for me.

"Translators are night owls" is, apparently, a total myth | Jul 29, 2020 |
I guess I'm one of the FEW night owls out there. Best time? NIGHT. No noise, no emails, no phone calls...
And I just do my best work at night. | | | Tom in London United Kingdom Local time: 02:08 Member (2008) Italian to English Question "When are you usually most focused and productive?". | Jul 29, 2020 |
Answer: when I'm working. Work automatically focuses me. I become oblivious to my surroundings - missing meals and all the rest of it. I'm full on. I think I am a translation fetishist. I'm obsessed with it and can't stop. So I can't say there's a particular time, or set of circumstances, when I'm more focused on my work. It's all the time.

Yes, I like to wake up early in the morning and start work. Probably as early as 3/3.30 a.m. Sometimes, 2 am too. And, my speed is usually twice or thrice more than usual in those hours. It remains so at least till 9 am. Till then, most of my work is done.
Happy to see, that I have 23% similar translator friends in this regard. | | | Felipe Tomasi Brazil Local time: 23:08 English to Portuguese + ... Usually morning | Jul 29, 2020 |
For me is better to handle the works at the beginning of the day so I have a good feeling of already having accomplished the jobs of the day.

The problem is, it's very hard for anyone to quit the regular routine of the house and be able to work (live) with a schedule that looks weird to everyone else. My wife complained a bit in the beginning, then she understood it when she started working at home too, and she did the same, and we both adhered to the weird hours.
If you have no kids and/or other commitments that require you to be awake during the "normal" hours, all you have to do is to try the night shift, and you'll never go back to the regular hours.
I lived and worked in "regular hours" for 45 years, waking up at 7:00 am, working till 6:00 pm, and sleeping at 11:00 pm. It was a bit strange to change only at 46. But there is no chance of going back to the regular hours. My productivity and my concentration are incomparably better at night. | | | LIZ LI China Local time: 10:08 French to Chinese + ... before deadline | Jul 30, 2020 |
Yeah, typical procrastinator. | | | In the evenings | Jul 30, 2020 |
Before quarantine, I was more productive in the morings but then that changed and now I'm more productive and focused in the evenings. It's kind of strange but well, I'm coping with it! | | | Pages in topic: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: When are you usually most focused and productive?
