Not only did agencies asked me to sign an NDA, but also some end customers.

I am afraid I have lost count of all the NDAs I have signed over the years. Needless to say, for a lot of them the "big project" never materialized. I even work with an agency that decided to update their NDA every year. Let’s hope that this “trend” doesn’t catch on. In my book the more red tape there is, the less likely you will get work. On the other hand, I have been working regularly with a few long-standing customers without signing a single NDA...

How many? Many, far too many. Recently I passed a translation test for a company after which I had to sign an NDA, fill out a wire transfer payment form and send them a copy of my bank statement. The last was a bit weird but it is a company in Ireland that handles international transactions. Tomorrow I will ask them point blank if they are going to give me an business.

It feels like 81%+ though.
You can kind of feel it when a company is coming with a serious offer. They tell you to go through their rigamarole, you roll your eyes and do it, and the work starts to come.

Certainly well under 20%. I can't remember when I last signed an NDA. In fact, I only remember doing it when I already knew that I was going to get the job.

Up to 20%, assuming that it's an inclusive interval, i.e. it includes zero at the bottom end.
For a good many years now I've made it clear to agencies that I won't look at an NDA or any of their other bumf unless there is a specific job on the table. Nor will I waste my time doing their data entry for them by entering my details into their translator database.

Since I hardly ever work with agencies nowadays, only one or two, and only occasionally, I don't recall the last time I had to sign an NDA, maybe once or twice over the past twenty years or so. Thank goodness for direct clients!

Once or twice I remember seeing environmentally-conscious, 'help save forests' like messages in the email signatures of those agencies that require you to print out, sign and scan, and then discard 20 odd pages of 'vendor onboarding documents' that never lead to any jobs.

Over the past few years, I signed NDAs for several translation agencies and never got any translation projects from them. Being a newbie feels great thinking that someone may give you an opportunity and then, you get nothing.

As others have said before, I don't know, and don't track such things, but it has happened all too often.
One common scenario:
Agency contacts me with potential job offer, but requires signing of NDA for me to look at source document. I sign, look at the source document, propose a fee, and - then it turns out (according to the agency) the end client has either chosen not to move forward or to use the services of another agency.

I'm really not sure I ever signed any NDAs. There was an agency I reached out to because I had spoken with them before, which was a good match for the kind of work I do, who sent me one, but I don't think I ever signed it. I am still in their database though, because someone called me with a job once. I refused because it was a weekend emergency and I had quite a bit planned for the weekend and wasn't going to sacrifice those plans for an unknown quantity.
I may have signed one for an agency I was already working with, and they continued to give me work after I signed, which is not really what this poll is about. ▲ Collapse
