两天前有朋友打电话来告诉我，他的好友 Overton 去世了。令我心情沉重了大半天。这位在西雅图小有名气的爵士音乐家我是5-6年前在朋友家的圣诞派对上认识的，还算新朋友。近年来，每年总有几次机会见面，每次见面听他弹钢琴总是派对的主要内容。只有一次上他家时没弹。我与他除了见面时的寒暄，饭桌上海阔天空的聊天，其它真正交流的时间不多，却对这位老艺术家颇为好感。

他让我不会忘记的地方是我觉得他一看就像是传奇人物黑人歌星 Ray Charles (1930– 2004), 脸上总是带着微笑。有次我就当面跟他这么说了；谁知他慢吞吞地说：“Ray 出道比我早几年，但没我帅！”原来他们年轻时就是在同一个圈子里打拼的，只是不在同一个乐队而是竞争对手。四、五十年代他们这批玩 Jazz 的毛小子隔三岔五周旋于西雅图的大宾馆名酒吧，相互之间当然要别苗头，“但我们都是 Gentlemen，从来不吵嘴打架。要争胜负也是在琴弦上。” 他说。后来 Ray Charles 与他们乐团的某个鼓手组成了一个“三重奏”（Trio，3 guys)，结果配合极佳，一炮打红。

每次见到我，他都会毫不犹豫地叫出我的中文名（因为我的朋友一直是这么叫我的）。这对七八十岁的老人来说是不太容易的，除非很熟悉。我能让他记住的绝不是我的翻译，因为他的艺术不需要翻译，音乐的题材我也翻不好。我甚至怀疑他记得住我从事的职业，但我可以肯定，他能记得住我是因为我的‘蒜炒菠菜’和‘油焖茄子’。有一次聚会他吃完先后又去添了两次，一连吃了三盘菠菜！每次联系哪天聚会，我朋友还会特意提醒他一句，这次也包括几道中国菜。我那朋友喜欢吃茄子，圣诞节期间也要买来吃。对我所说的：“秋后茄子有毒”置之不理。 其实我会烧的也就是几个乡下人的家常菜。我奶奶常说，菠菜不能焖，茄子饭上蒸。要是早知道小时候学的几手那么顶用就好了，谁能想到老来还能靠它交上了不同寻常的朋友呢？

人去音留，他的硬碟今年入冬会多听听，手头有一段首次见面时的旧录音，我会珍藏，这段就我有，因为那次在朋友家就我正好带了个voice recognition device/recorder, 原来只想稍录一段，结果越听越好听，结果把原来机子里已有的杂七杂八的东西全抹掉了，空出来录他弹的。
